"Hallowed Be Thy Name"

Oct 6, 2019    Glen McCarthy    Luke 11:2

In part two of the Prayer Guide for Disciples of Christ series our emphasis is praying, “hallowed be thy name” from the Lord’s Prayer. Most times when Christians pray the Lord’s Prayer, they often quote this line as if they’re declaring that God’s name is holy in a spirit of adoration. While adoration is an important part of worship, historically this line has been understood by the church to be a petition. Since we know that God is holy, what does it mean for us to request that His name be made holy among us?

In this sermon we learned that Jesus was teaching His disciples to pray that God’s name be made holy in the hearts and minds of people, but also for a future reality. That is, the day when God will finally, once and for all receive the reverence and honor that He deserves. Because of Jesus’ perfect obedience to our Father, God has highly exalted Him. He has been given a name above every name that will be hallowed by all. Let’s practice praying this petition this week, that the name of Jesus would be made holy among us.
